There are two items of interest to be informed of when you view a full moon. First, the moon is consistently the same size, no matter what it's position is in the sky. When the moon is close to the horizon the human eye perceives that the moon is actually larger as the eye has points of reference for comparison to items such as the ocean, buildings or other terrestrial structures. Second, a zoom or telephoto lens, by definition will bring a distant subject closer to the lens. Said lenses also "flatten out" the composition of the photograph so that items in the image appear on top of each other.
